For many years, each EMC in Georgia had to independently purchase all of its power at wholesale rates from other power suppliers since they didn't have their own generating and transmission facilities. But with the recession and oil crisis in the early 1970s, the EMCs needed to meet their customers' energy needs at reasonable costs. It was for this reason that in 1974, 39 of Georgia's 42 EMCs formed a new generation and transmission cooperative, Oglethorpe Power Corporation. Ownership in generating plants and transmission assets ensured the EMCs' ability to provide their customers with more reliable and affordable electric service. OPC was restructured into three companies on April 1, 1997: • Georgia System Operations Corporation: power system operations • Georgia Transmission Corporation: transmission construction and maintenance • Oglethorpe Power Corporation: generation operation and asset management The three companies collectively are informally called the Family of Companies. |
